چکیده

We here present the first results of fully three-dimensional (3-D) MHD simulations of radiative cooling pulsed (time-variable) jets for a set of parameters which are suitable for protostellar outflows. Considering different initial magnetic field topologies in approximate equipartition with the thermal gas, i.e., (i) a longitudinal, and (ii) a helical field, both of which permeating the jet and the ambient medium; and (iii) a purely toroidal field permeating only the jet, we find that the overall morphology of the pulsed jet is not very much affected by the presence of the different magnetic field geometries in comparison to a nonmagnetic calculation. Instead, the magnetic fields tend to affect essentially the detailed structure and emission properties behind the shocks at the head and at the pulse-induced internal knots, particularly for the helical and toroidal geometries. In these cases, we find, for example, that the Hα emissivity behind the internal knots can be about three to four times larger than that of the purely hydrodynamical jet. We also find that some features, like the nose cones that often develop at the jet head in 2-D calculations involving toroidal magnetic fields, are smoothed out or absent in the 3-D calculations. Effect of the temperature profile of the accretion disk on the structure of jets and outflows around protostars

Magnetic fields play an important role in creating, driving, and in the evolution of outflows and jets from protostars and accretion disks. On the other hand, the temperature profile of the accretion disks may also affect the structure of the magnetic field and outflows. In this paper, we use the self-similar method in cylindrical coordinates to investigate the effect of the temperature profile...

Protostellar Jets Driven by a Disorganized Magnetic Field

We have proposed a viscoelastic model of the Maxwell stresses due to the disorganized magnetic field in MRI-driven MHD turbulence. Viscoelastic fluids in the laboratory are known to produce jet-like structures under the action of a rotating sphere. Here we argue that a similar mechanism may help explain jets in protostellar systems. Such jets would be driven not by large-scale organized magneti...

YSO Jets and Molecular Outflows: Tracing the History of Star Formation

Collimated outflows from Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) can be seen as tracers of the accretion powered systems which drive them. In this paper I review some theoretical and observational aspects of YSO outflows through the prism of questions relating to the protostellar source. The issue I address is: can collimated outflows be used as “fossils” allowing the history of protostellar evolution to ...

Magnetic Fields in Astrophysical Jets: From Launch to Termination

Long-lived, stable jets are observed in a wide variety of systems, from protostars, through Galactic compact objects to active galactic nuclei (AGN). Magnetic fields play a central role in launching, accelerating, and collimating the jets through various media. The termination of jets in molecular clouds or the interstellar medium deposits enormous amounts of mechanical energy and momentum, and...
